Porous substrates and materials tend to absorb moisture, which can affect the adhesion and performance of sealants if not properly pre-treated. Stone primers are specialist types of primers that are made using special adhesion-promotion agents that penetrate the stone surface greatly enhancing the bond strength of the sealant. Stone primers work by preparing the stone's surface, promoting adhesion, improving performance and in some cases (particularly when using silicone, although, specialist natrual stone silicone sealants should always be used) work as a barrier to prevent staining or discoloration of the substrate where the silicone sealant sometimes reacts. The use of stone primers is highly recommended by manufacturers for certain applications and care should always be taken to test a small area before carrying out a large application.
